Pennington Conservancy Annual General Meeting
This year’s Pennington Conservancy’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) was well received and informative for those members who were able to attend. It was an important opportunity to look back on the year’s achievements, present the Financial Report, bring members up to date regarding new developments and projects and to thank all those who have given of their time and energy to serve this community! An appropriate time to reflect, with gratitude, on the dedication, energy, and community spirit that continue to make our village such a special place to live.
Billy Pritchard presented the Treasurer’s report first. It was a positive report with profits up from last year and the Beach Café running well, generating profits to be used for environmental projects within Pennington. This report was followed by a detailed Chairlady’s report by Mandy van Prooijen. After giving us a brief overview of the year’s activities, the main focus of Mandy’s report was to present the Conservancy’s new website to our members and give them a preview of the contents and to encourage them to go ‘on line’ and explore it further. The new Website is a source of information about the Conservancy, including the Beach Café (which funds the work done by the Conservancy), the projects and activities carried out by its volunteers and is an important reference for everything to do with nature and our natural environment. Our members and Pennington Residents were encouraged to used it as a reference and to inform themselves about the rich and diverse natural ecosystem in this area. The aim of our website, created by Brad Williams, is to use it to communicate and inform both our members and Pennington residents about environmental initiatives, our fauna and flora, news articles and updates – all things environmental in our town and Conservancy.
Our achievements highlight the importance of community-driven conservation. Through the ongoing support of residents, volunteers, committee members, and local partners, the Conservancy has continued its work in protecting Pennington’s coastal forests, river systems, wildlife, indigenous vegetation, and natural open spaces.
Among the highlights of the year were:
- Continued invasive alien plant clearing initiatives
- A few environmental awareness and educational projects – ARK – wearetheark.org.
- Support for and protection of local biodiversity and wildlife monitoring
- Community clean-up projects
- Liaising with Municipal Officials and advocating for responsible and sustainable environmental management
- Strengthening relationships with local environmental stakeholders and organisations.
These efforts are only possible because of the commitment of individuals who generously give their time and expertise for the benefit of the broader community. Mandy extended her sincere thanks to the outgoing Committee members, Louise Algate and Lynn Hoim, for their service and countless volunteer hours throughout the past year.
The new Committee members were elected! There were 7 members who put themselves forward for election all of which were elected to serve. They are :
- Mandy van Prooijen
- Billy Pritchard
- Jeanette Rimbault
- Brad Williams
- Sheena Maré
- Natalie Danks
- Kayleigh Albers
We also encourage members who are passionate about conservation and community involvement to consider serving on the sub-committees that are being formed. Strong participation and active engagement are essential to ensuring the continued success of the Conservancy. As environmental pressures continue to grow along our coastline, in our town and within our natural and wild spaces, the role of local conservancies becomes increasingly important. Protecting Pennington’s unique character and natural beauty requires ongoing vigilance, collaboration, and community participation.
We thank you for your continued support of the Conservancy. “Conservation is a community effort — every contribution matters.”
